In this multi-layered story set in 1946, a young, female lawyer travels from New York City to Mississippi to investigate the murder of an African-American veteran. Regina Robichard struggles to learn the rules of a small Southern town in which few are willing to speak to her, even though everyone, black and white, knows everything about everybody else. When Regina realizes the town is also the site of her favorite children’s book, she realizes that story holds clues she can use in her first, and most important, case.
A blend of historical fiction and mystery, with just a fairy dust sprinkling of magical realism, this novel features memorable characters, a vivid setting, and a realistic yet hopeful ending, and launched the Dundee Library Book Club into a far-ranging discussion during their August meeting(s).
