The Mitchells vs. the Machines
To celebrate Pride Month, everyone is invited to a fun movie night. We’ll be showing The Mitchells vs. the Machines, an action-packed and hilarious sci-fi adventure story about a quirky family going on a road trip to take their daughter Katie away to college when suddenly a robot apocalypse begins, and the Mitchells become humanity’s unlikeliest heroes. With a queer teen protagonist (Katie) and state-of the-art animation, this movie won numerous awards and was nominated for an Oscar in 2022 for Best Animated Feature Film.
The animation style of this film is groundbreaking. It has two different aesthetics that contrast with each other very well: one is more of a hand-drawing style and the other style is sleeker and more polished. There is also a subtle watercolor quality to it, as well as live-action puppeteering. In the same scene, you may experience 3D art, flat line drawings, doodles, watercolor, puppets and more. It is insane, but visually stunning.
Throughout the history of animation queer characters typically did not have leading roles, until now! Katie Mitchell is the first LGBTQ+ animated main character. Kudos to directors Michael Rianda, and (Illinois native) Jeff Rowe, and of course their amazing film team for breaking barriers by including the first openly queer main character! Michael Rianda explains that when crafting Katie’s character, it felt natural for her to be queer; however, they first had to convince Sony Pictures Animation about this.
Helping to convince Sony was an emotional and powerful letter written by Elizabeth (Lizzie) Nichols, one of the crew members from the art department. Watch the GLAAD interview where Rianda reads the letter at minute 5:15.
We're so excited to be showing this! Come and hang out with us!
