Program Description

Event Details

The 1619 Project is a long-form journalism project developed by Nikole Hannah Jones, writers from The New York Times, and The New York Times Magazine which "aims to reframe the country's history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of the United States' national narrative." The Fox River Valley Public Library District is hosting a three-part community discussion of the 1619 Project at the Dundee Library on the first Wednesday of each month. Refreshments will be served. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

The full issue of The New York Times Magazine is available online: https://pulitzercenter.org/sites/default/files/full_issue_of_the_1619_project.pdf Printed copies are available upon request at the Information Desk.

This discussion will focus on pages 80-98 of the August 18, 2019, issue of The New York Times Magazine. These pages include the following content: “Mass Incarceration” by Bryan Stevenson (pages 80–81), “The Wealth Gap” by Trymaine Lee (pages 82–83), “Hope” by Djeneba Aduayom (photography), Nikole Hannah-Jones (introduction), and Wadzanai Mhute (captions) (pages 86–93), “Shadow of the Past” by Anne C. Bailey (text) and Dannielle Bowman (photograph) (page 98).

If you missed last month's discussion, that's no problem! All are welcome to join us and take part in the discussion.
