What you think you know about The Montgomery Bus Boycott is incomplete.
Two high school girls and a college English teacher were among those who set the stage for the boycott well before Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat on December 1, 1955, Women have not often shown up in Civil Rights history, but women planned, coordinated, and implemented one of history’s most successful boycotts in conjunction with a court case comprised of four female plaintiffs that made it all the way to the Supreme Court. The backstory of this boycott is fascinating and will change your understanding of history.
The presenter is Sarah Sullivan who is the Department Chair Economics, Political Science, History, Instructor of History and Business and MCC Faculty Association president at McHenry County College.
After the presentation, whoever would like to walk over to the Fox River Valley Public Library next door is welcome to visit the Mobile Museum of Tolerance that is hosted by the library and State Representative Suzanne Ness. The purpose of the Mobile Museum of Tolerance is to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to promote human dignity by empowering them to raise their voices to combat anti-Semitism, bullying, racism, hate and intolerance.
