Have you noticed more ways to gamble in your everyday life and in your community? With lottery, bingo, video slots and video poker, a nearby casino, sports betting and online casinos and slots, we almost can't get through our days without being faced with the opportunity to gamble. And while gambling can be an infrequent, recreational pastime for some, for others it can lead to unintended consequences. Whether or not we choose to gamble, we all need to know how individuals, families, and communities can be impacted when gambling goes awry. This workshop will share:

  • tips for safer gambling practices
  • who's most at-risk of developing a problem
  • signs of a potential problem
  • why and how gambling can be fun for some, and trouble for others
  • how even those who don't gamble can be hurt by problem gambling
  • where to turn for more information or help

Elizabeth Thielen is a problem gambling counselor who specializes in raising public awareness of this issue. With over 20 years of experience in the addictions field, Elizabeth has spoken locally, statewide, and nationally on the topic. Neutral on the subject of adult, state-sanctioned gambling, all workshops seek to provide factual and unbiased information to help attendees as they navigate a world with increasing access to gambling opportunities. A former competitive athlete, Elizabeth is particularly motivated to help athletes understand their unique risk for developing a gambling disorder.
